Who Was Comenius?

ESCOLA FREDERIC GODÀS (SPAIN)

Escola Frederic Godàs is a public school in Lleida (Spain) and it has got 18 groups of students..
The school is located in Cappont neighbourhood placed on the left side of Segre river.
The school was built and starts going on in 1981

At the moment we have 480 students in our school. We’ve observed a light increase in the number of pupils, about a 3 %.Most of our students live in the surroundings of the school, and they come from Lleida ,although few of them (15%)come from different countries like Romania, Nigeria, China, Morocco, Bolivia, Argentina, Croatia.

The teachers staff

At the moment we are 32 teachers:8 in kindergarten, including a kindergarten assistant,14 in primary education,3 English teachers,3 P.E teachers,2 Special needs teachers,1 music teacher and 1 catholic religion teacher.
All the staff participate in an active way in centre life and its activities and their relationship is based in respect, cooperation, collaboration, cohabitation and communication.
We are permanently in contact with families and in the same way they use to participate in the centre’s life dealing different activities that teachers are also involved

Other context indicators

In 2004 we update a context study relating to families' socio-cultural aspects. From it we obtained the next dates over a 643 people sample
1.Language for family use:44%Catalan,28%, Spanish, Catalan-Spanish 24% alike,4% other
2.Knowledge of Catalan:76% understand and speak,20% understand but not speak it,4% do not understand or speak, 35% had accreditation of Catalan studies
3.Knowledge of Spanish:96% understand and speak it
4.Knowledge of other languages :French (31% base line,7% high level), English (19%base line,7% high level), other (4% base line,4% high level)
5.Use of ICT at the household level:73% of households have a computer and 49%have Internet access

At the moment we are dealing with different projects as:school library project,environmental education project,autonomy school project and an innovation one related to foreign languages (PELE),that consists in teaching Art in English to our eldest students and also psychomotricity .We' ve participated in European projects (Comenius 1:Toys and games)from 1998-2000 and other ones like Orator projects or innovation ones.We base our educational practice in an active methodology to facilitate our students' learning,and we want to involve them in the European context as responsible citizens.

OAKFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL (UNITED KINGDOM)

Oakfield Primary School is situated in the heart of a close nit community. We are dedicated to provide our pupils with knowledge and skills that they need for their up and coming future. Our devoted staff teach both national and international curriculums cross the school. Oakfield has been recently awarded with the International School Award for our link to Ghana and other international projects across the school.
The purpose of this project is to help widen the knowledge and understanding of our pupils, to inform them of the world beyond Rugby. To help open doors of opportunities.

KURKELAN KOULU (FINLAND)

Kerava is a city of just the right size and is located close to Finland’s capital city Helsinki. Kerava is a green city that is built for people to live in. A safe place to live, Kerava also offers an abundance of diversified local services in and around its central pedestrian precinct. Kerava is a modern city that has grown around the railway. A city that knows its roots but heads confidently into the future.

The Kurkela Elementary School opened in August 1987.We have grades 1-6 with no parallel classes.The number of pupils ca. 160 varying yearly.The Day Care Center with a Kindergarten class is located in the same building as the rest of the school.
Our school has participated several experiments such as:
- The National Experiment on sexual equality including e.g. teaching technical and textile work for both boys and girls.
-The National Experiment on evaluation, School 2001 Project facilitating the use of computers in learning and teaching.
- Aquarium School Project with the aim of making the school as a functional learning center.
- Co-operation with The Kerava Historical Museum.
We put an emphasis on activities in the fields of:

- Internationality and the English language
- Skills in interaction and school democracy
- Studying and learning skills
- Art, drama and technological/handworking skills
- Natural sciences and recycling
- Extracurricular activities

Pedagogical principles

-To improve and develop teaching and learning in a stimulating and safe learning environment.
-Students’ individuality, activity and ability to act in a sociable manner are our first priorities.
-Students are encouraged to work actively and independently.
-Working is based on both teachers and classes’ weekly meetings and ultimately on each pupil’s own planning of his/her work.
-Our school is constantly developing its role by co-operating actively with parents and other interest groups.
-We have ten pupils who have learning difficulties in reading and writing, maths, foreign languages ETC.

CIRCOLO DIDATTICO SAN GIOVANNI BOSCO (ITALY)

The town Barrafranca, in which our school is situated , is in the middle-oriental part of Sicily and precisely in the province of Enna.Our school, named S. Giovanni Bosco, is a public school set up in an urban area and consists in a complex of three schools distributed within a part of the territory.The main aim of our school is to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils and prepare them to be the future, responsible citizens For this reason we try to give all our best education through good methodologies and interesting and enjoyable activities and laboratories which help the children to learn actively.We have previously participated in Comenius projects.
The social, cultural and economic condition of our pupil’s families is medium, but there is a small group who comes from a low social status.Our school has been included in a disadvantaged area with pupils at risk of social exclusion and for that reason we elaborate every year a project which involve them in a project developing transversal skills.A few pupils with special needs and mentally disabled pupils attend our school. They are helped by special teachers who promote their integration with normal children.
We have Italian’s emigrated children coming from foreign schools (due to “return emigration” for the economic crisis in Europe) and pupils coming from Romania, Ucraina and China. They are helped to integrate in the classes, in the school and in the new society context.
PUPILS
At the moment 617 pupils attend our school: 231 in the pre-primary school and 386 in the primary school. They all live in Barrafranca We are observing a light decrease of the number of pupils due to the birth diminution.
TEACHERS
In our school there are 61 teachers in total:22 in the pre-primary school, including 1 Catholic religion teacher and 38 in the primary school which includes 21 class teachers, 7 class and English teachers, 3 English teachers, 5 special needs teachers and 2 Catholic religion teachers.All the teachers participate in the school life and in the school’s decisions, are constantly in contact with pupils’ family, work in team and are jointly responsible of the group of pupils.They collaborate each other with respect in choosing the aims for each subject and in planning the activities for the pupils.
Pupils’ parents participate in the school life and in some school’s decisions and collaborate with the teachers to improve their children’s education.

PRÄSTHOLMSSKOLAN (SWEDEN)

Prästholmsskolan is a public school in Boden. The school is located in the city of Boden but also near the forests and a big lake.
Prästholmsskolan was built in 1974 and the building is on one floor. Now we have three classes in a separate building 100 meters from the other school. There we also have after school activities for the children. We have such activities in both buildings.
The school has two principals. One for the compulsory primary school for children from 7 to 11 years old and the class for all 6-year-olds in a preschool class. And one principal for the compulsory school for the learning disabled.
There is a good co-operation between the two of school forms.
The schools profile is ICT and culture. The pupils learn to handle computers directly when they begin, both with internet and pedagogical programs. In every classroom there is at least one computer but in the common area there are many computers and we have big screen TV/ computers in every classroom.
Culture in all form is like a natural part in the teaching, through music, dance, rhythm and creative. We also work much with lifestyle and health and sustainable development.
All children in Sweden have food for free in school.
Our pupils:
Pre-school classes 27 pupils in two classes.( 13 + 14 )
First grade 20 pupils in one class.
Second grade 34 pupils in two classes.
Third grade 38 pupils in two classes.
Fourth grade 32 pupils in two classes.
Fifth grade 30 pupils in two classes.

Särskola (School for 23pupils
Most of the pupils live in the surroundings of the school but we have quite many that come from other parts of Boden. There are a lot of students with different origins such as Somalia, Turkey, Russia and Iraq.
The teachers staff:
At the moment we are 28 teachers with a little different sort of education.
From august 2010 Prästholmsskolan became bigger because another school in the area closed down. All the children and most of the teachers moved to us. They are also involved in this project. children with learning disability ):

The legend of the Holy Painter
Long, long time ago a street painter, tattered and tired for the walk, went around the streets of the town of Barrafranca asking the people he was meeting to make a portrait or a painting.
His look was penetrating and bright.
But everyone refused him and upset he sat down and when he saw a woman, who was caring for her hens, he asked her if she might have needed a portrait or a painting.
The woman answered yes and said that she would have liked a nice painting of the Madonna of the Star that certainly would have brought blessings in her house, but she did not know how to pay his work.
The painter replied that a place to sleep and something to eat were enough for him.
The woman agreed and let him in her house and gave him a sheet just to have a large size painting.
The painter closed himself into a room and did not go out anymore.
At evening the good hearted woman prepared a plate of lasagne and brought it to the painter.
She knocked at the door and not having any answer she left the dish behind the door.
Next day, at noon, she brought a plate of maccheroni with tomato sauce and a glass of wine, but the painter did not open the door.
And thus she did the second day without having any answer from inside the room.
The third day she decided to enter into the room.
What she saw impressed her a lot.
The painter was not there, but what she brought on the preceding days was intact and still smoking on the table.
Suddenly she saw the painting on the wall at the end of the room.
In the middle stood the Madonna of the Stars and at her sides Saint Alexander and Saint John the Baptist, the two most beloved saints in the town.
Saint Alessandro’s image was identical to the painter’s face.
She understood everything, went out and hailed it as a miracle.

La leggenda del Santo Pittore
Tanto, tanto tempo fa capitò a Barrafranca un pittore ambulante. Era lacero e stanco per il lungo camminare, ma il suo sguardo era penetrante e luminoso. Girava per le vie del paese chiedendo alla gente se qualcuno avesse bisogno di un ritratto o di un quadro, ma tutti lo respingevano.
Avvilito si sedette e quando vide una donna che accudiva le galline le chiese se avesse bisogno di un ritratto o di un quadro.
La donna rispose di sì e gli disse che le sarebbe piaciuto avere un bel quadro della Madonna della Stella che sicuramente avrebbe portato tante benedizioni nella sua casa, ma non sapeva come pagarlo.
Il pittore le rispose che un posto per dormire e qualcosa da mangiare sarebbero stati sufficienti.
La donna acconsentì, lo fece entrare nella sua casa e gli diede un lenzuolo per avere un quadro di grandi dimensioni.
Il pittore si chiuse dentro una stanza e non uscì più. A sera, la donna, che era di buon cuore, gli portò un piatto di lasagne. Bussò e non avendo nessuna risposta depose il piatto dietro la porta chiusa.
L’indomani a mezzogiorno gli portò un piatto di maccheroni con il sugo e un bicchiere di vino, ma, dopo aver bussato, non ebbe alcuna risposta.
E così fece il secondo giorno senza avere mai una risposta dall’interno.
Il terzo giorno decise di entrare e ciò che vide la impressionò moltissimo.
Il pittore non c’era, ma sopra il tavolo trovò le portate dei giorni precedenti intatte e ancora fumanti. Subito vide il quadro sulla parete in fondo alla stanza: al centro stava la Madonna della Stella con uno sguardo di infinita dolcezza e ai suoi lati Sant’Alessandro e San Giovanni Battista, i santi più amati del paese.
Il viso di Sant’Alessandro era identico a quello del pittore.
La donna capì tutto, uscì e gridò al miracolo.
Our Lady of the Star
Joint patron of Barrafranca
Feast day 8th of September

The cult of Our Lady of the Star goes back to the time when Barrafranca was founded in the early 1500 thanks to the marquis Matteo Barresi who it’s thought he introduced it from France. The inhabitants of Barrafranca have always turned to Her in the past in hard times and during natural calamities (drought, locusts invasions, earthquakes…) taking the picture in procession to obtain favours.
The picture represents the Madonna of the Star with Baby Jesus seated between the two most beloved saints of the town: Saint Alexander on Her right and Saint John the Baptist on Her left.
The ancient picture of the Madonna of the Star was stolen in June 1977 with all the applied precious votive offerings and it was never found.
In 1978 it was replaced by a new one painted by the local painter Gaetano Vicari.
It is a costume, in the preceding 15 days before the feast, to attend a novena in the church where the picture is and to adorn the streets with multicoloured illuminations and stars that light up in the evenings.
It’s very interesting the age long tradition of i ritini in the early afternoon.
Harnessed mules and horses, sometimes drawing richly decorated carts, go to Madonna’s della Stella church transporting the offerings of grain collected round the town.
In the evening the picture, inside a wooden arch, is carried on shoulder in procession.
The fireworks conclude the feast.


La Madonna della Stella
Compatrona di Barrafranca
Festa 8 Settembre

Il culto per la Madonna della Stella risale al tempo della fondazione di Barrafranca avvenuta agli inizi del 1500 per opera del marchese Matteo Barresi che si pensa l’abbia importato dalla Francia. Nel passato gli abitanti di Barrafranca si sono sempre rivolti alla Madonna della Stella nei momenti difficili e durante le calamità naturali (siccità, in-vasione di locuste, terremoti...), portando in processione il quadro per ottenere delle grazie.
Il quadro rappresenta la Madonna con il Bambino Gesù assisa tra i due santi più amati del paese: Sant’Alessandro alla Sua destra e San Giovanni Battista alla Sua sinistra.
L’antico quadro della Madonna della Stella fu rubato nel giugno 1977 con tutti i preziosi ex-voto che vi erano applicati e mai più ritrovato.
Nel 1978 fu sostituito da uno nuovo (quello attuale), dipinto dal pittore barrese Gaetano Vicari.
E’ usanza, nei primi 15 giorni che precedono il giorno della festa, partecipare alla novena in chiesa e adornare le strade con luminarie colorate e stelle che si illuminano la sera.
E’ molto interessante la tradizione secolare de i ritini nel primo pomeriggio del giorno della festa.
Muli e cavalli bardati a festa, talvolta trainando dei carretti riccamente decorati, si recano verso la chiesa della Madonna della Stella, trasportando le offerte di sacchi di grano, raccolto in giro per il paese.
La sera il quadro, dentro un’arca di legno, viene portato a spalla in processione.
I fuochi d’artificio concludono la festa.

THE LEGEND OF THE GIANT OF THE PINE

He was born in a village near Barcelona and he was so tall and strong that sometimes he used a pine as a stick to walk.That's why he was known by the name of the giant of the pine.When he was thirsty, he went to the nearest river and drank all the water in one gulp, so it seemed the river had suddenly dried.He was a farmer.One day while he sowed,a man asked him the way to the village as he was so strong he raised both ox and plow to show it.

When the giant heard that Barcelona had fallen under the power of the Moors,he was so angry that he kicked off a pine tree by the roots and in a couple of ticks came to the city.Then he asked for the moor that ruled the city, popularly Known as the city giant,to fight.They did it and the giant of the pine was the winner,defeating the city giant hitting him with the pine.

Our popular song The giant of the pine,explains in the first strophe how the giant is going to Barcelona,just dancing throughout the way.In the second,explains how the city giant runs away across the roofs and the last one explains how the wife of the pine giant is passing in front of him.
